Tony, the Amigurumi Bookmark Bat (US Terms)
Meet tiny Tony, the amigurumi bat that sleeps upside-down in your bookshelf! For Christmas, my mother gave me Austin Wright’s best seller Tony & Susan. To say that I eat that book is just not enough. Not only my little fella amigurumi was inspired by this reading: the brilliant movie Nocturnal Animals by Tom Ford is a represention of this novel. It was thinking about “Nocturnal Animals” that Tony came out from my pencil. Given that I recommend to you the book and the movie, I think it’s time to get started with Tony, shall we begin?
PRELIMINARY NOTE
If you are willing to make one of these, please do not steal my pattern. You can share it and sell the products of your work: just link this page in the detail! If you have Instagram (or Facebook), use @1nstayarn (or @InstaYarn in case of FB) to let me know about your work. I would so appreciate it!
QUEUE THIS PATTERN ON RAVELRY BEFORE YOU GET STARTED! :3
Suggested Materials (US terms)
These are just suggestions about the materials. Keep in mind that increasing the hook size the amigurumi will not fit a regular book and it won’t fit as a bookmark!
- B hook (2.25 mm)
- Cotton black (or pink :3) thread
- Safety pin (to keep count of the rounds)
- 2 small eyes (they can be safety eyes, but I used 2 little black beads)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Polyfil fiber
- Felt (black or pink or whatever you like)

- Magic Ring (MR — nice and neat tutorial > QUI)

The amigurumi pattern
Work in rounds. I place the safety pin in the last stitch of every round so I have to keep count just of the current one.

BOOKMARK CHAIN
Simply work a chain that is long double the size of your average book, adding 1 inch just to fit better! I made 160 chain stitches: leave a long tail on BOTH sides of the chain to sew the feet to the body.
ASSEMBLING AND FINAL TOUCHES
Now you can sew the body to the head and weave in the relative end. Done? Good! Take the bookmark chain and insert it at the bottom of the body, just like in the picture below. Be sure to have 2 equal segments on both sides.
If you want to be super sure that the legs won’t move, make a simple knot on the chain (pic below).
Sew the feet to the chain.
For the wings and the ears I didn’t make a drawing: I just freeformed them with my scissor until I was 100% ok with them. I used a single stripe of black felt (about 6 inches) for the wings. Just fold it in half and cut out the profile of a single wing.
When you are completely satisfied with your shapes, pin them to the amigurumi in the right position and just go for the final assembly. I use hot glue because it harden the felt and I like it much for amigurumis. You can use whatever tecnique you prefer!
